Maria Cristina Falls

This is Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan City in all its grandeur. Mindanao's first hydroelectric plant was built near this waterfall in the 1950s, the reason Iligan became the "Industrial City of the South" as giant factories were built because of the cheap electricity. But in the 1970s, Maria Cristina's waters were diverted to run turbines, so it became "Maria Cristina Fell," or "Maria Cristina False," or sometimes "Falls by appointment." On ordinary days, only very little water trickle down the falls. But on weekends, they open up the dam for a few minutes for visitors to see the falls as it was before it fell.
